Overview

What retail and in-store advertising covers

Retail and in-store advertising is everything a shopper sees from the moment they spot a shop to the moment they pay. It covers the outside of the store — signage, shutters, dealer boards — and the inside, from shelf strips and danglers to trolleys, billing screens and carry bags. Because it sits closest to the purchase decision, it is usually planned alongside distribution and trade activity rather than as standalone media.

Who it reaches. Shoppers already inside or walking past a store, plus the retailer and counter staff who influence what gets recommended.

Buying

How retail and in-store advertising is bought

General trade is bought store by store, normally through a field or visibility agency that signs up the retailer, installs the material and then audits it. Modern trade and chain formats are contracted centrally with the retailer, and space is sold as a defined element — an end cap, a gondola, a fixed number of shelf strips — for a run of weeks or months. What varies is the store count, the class and location of outlet, whether the retailer is compensated in stock or fee, and how long the material actually survives on site.

Planner tip. Decide how many stores you can genuinely visit and audit before you decide how many you can print for.

Questions

Questions about retail and in-store advertising

What is the difference between general trade and modern trade in-store branding?

General trade means kirana shops and standalone outlets, negotiated one at a time and executed by field teams. Modern trade means organised chains and large formats, contracted centrally with standard elements, planogram rules and fixed campaign windows. The formats look similar but the buying process, lead time and level of control are quite different.

Do I need permission for storefront branding or a shop shutter?

You need the retailer's consent for the surface, and for anything visible from the street you also need to satisfy the local municipal body's signage rules on size, projection and illumination. In malls, the property's own fascia and signage guidelines apply instead. Check both before fabricating, because rework on a fitted board is expensive.

How long does in-store material last?

It depends entirely on format. Paper danglers and wobblers are short-lived and get replaced or removed quickly, printed shelf strips and posters typically last a season, and metal or acrylic dealer boards and shutters last years. Plan a refresh cycle rather than treating it as a one-time deployment.

What sits under retail and in-store advertising?
