Overview

What television and cable advertising covers

Paid airtime on Indian television, from national satellite channels down to a single town's local cable feed. It covers standard commercial spots between programmes, on-screen overlays such as L-bands and scrolling tickers that run while the show continues, programme sponsorship, and branded segments produced with the channel. Buys can be pitched at a whole language market or narrowed to a district through cable operators.

Who it reaches. Household viewers in a chosen language market, daypart and programme genre, including audiences that are light users of digital media.

Buying

How television and cable advertising is bought

Airtime is bought as commercial time in seconds, planned by channel, genre, daypart and programme, with spot lengths and frequency set against a target audience. National and regional satellite buys are negotiated with the broadcaster or its sales house, either on a cost-per-rating-point basis or as fixed spots in named programmes. Local cable is bought through multi-system operators and local cable operators, which allows targeting down to a town or block, while sponsorships and branded content are negotiated per property with the deliverables agreed in advance.

Planner tip. Get the self-declaration certificate and the channel's technical check out of the way before you commit air dates, because paperwork, not creative, is what usually delays a first telecast.

Questions

Questions about television and cable advertising

Do I need approval before running a TV ad in India?

There is no pre-censorship board for television commercials the way there is for cinema, but a self-declaration certificate must be filed on the Broadcast Seva portal before a new ad is telecast. The ad must also comply with Rule 7 of the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994 and the ASCI code. Individual channels run their own standards and technical checks and can refuse material that fails either.

What is the difference between an L-band and a scroll advertisement?

An L-band is an L-shaped strip that wraps the bottom and one side of the screen while the programme keeps running, so it carries a larger visual. A scroll, sometimes called an aston or ticker, is a text or narrow graphic strip that moves across the lower part of the screen. Both are overlays rather than breaks, which is why they are used for short, urgent messages and offers.

How is local cable advertising different from a national TV spot?

Local cable is delivered through the cable operator's own feed rather than the broadcaster's national signal, so it can be confined to a specific town, district or set of neighbourhoods. That makes it suited to shops, dealerships, clinics, coaching centres and property launches with a limited catchment. National and regional satellite spots buy a whole language market and are planned on channel and programme, not on geography within a state.
